Poinsettias are the most popular plant sold each holiday season. They’re perennials, meaning they grow year-round, and they come in a variety of sizes and colors. In this post, we’re going to share some interesting facts about poinsettias, how to take care of them and the many uses you can put them to this holiday season.
If you haven’t got your poinsettias for the holidays yet, come in to Jackson’s Greenhouse & Garden Center, Inc. today. We’ve got seven different colors of poinsettias in three different sizes, and all of them are grown here on-site. Our poinsettias start at just $11.99, which, given their potential usefulness during the holiday months and beyond, is quite the deal!
The best simple holiday gift
Poinsettias, like fruitcake, are a traditional small holiday gift, commonly exchanged this time of year between family and friends. The traditional red and green plant embodies the holiday spirit, and to receive one is flattering, knowing that someone is thinking of you. When you give someone a poinsettia as a gift, it’s there to remind them of you all holiday season. Even if you can’t make it home for the holidays, when your friends and family see your gift poinsettia, you will be on their minds!
How to care for poinsettias
Caring for a poinsettia is not that difficult. They just need to be watered regularly, just anytime the soil begins to look or feel dry. Poinsettias need a lot of sun to grow, so try to keep them out of shaded areas in your home.
There’s not much else to worry about regarding poinsettias. They don’t have common natural pests, so you won’t invite an infestation by having them indoors, and they’re not particularly poisonous, so you don’t have to worry about what happens if your kids or pets get curious and eat a few leaves. (We don’t suggest eating it, however, as the poinsettia will still give you a stomachache.)
Curious about how to use poinsettias this holiday season? Here are some ideas:
- Poinsettia gift basket: If you want to be creative and spice up your poinsettia gift basket a bit, here are some ideas. Put the potted poinsettia into a gift basket, and surround it with nuts, chocolates and fruit.
- Decorated pot: Repot your poinsettia into a handmade pot, or dress up your poinsettia’s pot with ribbons, bows, glitter or metallic foil or paint. The holiday season is the perfect time for a little bit of glamour.
- Decorate your poinsettia like a miniature Christmas tree: Use tinsel or small strings of popcorn garland to dress up your perennials in Topeka, KS.
What to do with your poinsettia after the holidays
If you live somewhere that doesn’t get below the 40s at any time in the year, then you can plant your poinsettia outdoors after Christmas. They can grow to be 10 feet tall outdoors!
If you don’t live somewhere warm, don’t plant your poinsettia outdoors; it doesn’t do well with frost. But you can easily keep your poinsettia alive and healthy indoors until next holiday season.
